WASHINGTON, DC – The Arizona Pharmacy Foundation has selected Carl Labbe, R.Ph., BS Pharm, as the recipient of the 2016 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Labbe was presented with the award at the Foundation Award Luncheon on June 10. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and the American Pharmacists Association with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Labbe is a member of the Arizona Pharmacy community, whose unwavering dedication and commitment to supporting his community is evident through his years of service. Beginning after his graduation from University of Connecticut College of Pharmacy in 1975, Labbe served as an advisor to the Jane Wayland Center, helping to manage behavioral medication for the young female patients with social and psychological problems.

He has served on countless committees, mentored young pharmacists, volunteered for his state pharmacy association, and has held numerous educational appointments over the years. Labbe has volunteered for several years as a soccer coach for American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) and then as a referee. He volunteered in various capacities for Special Olympics and the Mesa Association for Sports for the Disabled (MASD), including assistant basketball coach. Labbe has also supported multiple teams during the Susan G Komen 3-day for the Cure walks.

Labbe more recently is a graduate of the 2013 Mesa Leadership Training and Development program and helped with transforming the Sirrine Adult Day Care into Oakwood Creative Care. He continues to be involved in the community, assisting with toy drives and working with the Mesa Prevention Alliance to help reduce prescription drug abuse.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
