WASHINGTON, DC – The Mississippi Pharmacists Association (MPhA) has selected Robert L. Salmon, R.Ph., as the recipient of the 2016 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Salmon was presented the award at the 145th Annual MPhA Convention and Trade Show on Tuesday, June 21. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and the American Pharmacists Association with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Salmon has been a registered pharmacist for 49 years and was a nationally certified disease state manager in diabetes, asthma and lipid management. In addition to being president of Southern Discount Drugs, Salmon is CEO of the Diabetic Shoppe, FootMindBody and Clinical Diagnostic Division in Charleston. He has also been a consultant to the Tallahatchie General Hospital and Extended Care facility.

Salmon was the chief and first full time pharmacist at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. He has served as commissioner and vice-mayor of Charleston. In addition, Salmon is a preceptor with the University of MS School of Pharmacy, where he graduated in 1967. Salmon uses his knowledge concerning health management to educate ministers, civic clubs and school groups about proper nutrition and diabetes management. In an effort to create a healthier Mississippi, his research and writing have been distributed to health care professionals and politicians as well as citizens of Mississippi. He was recently honored with the Mississippi Governor's Volunteer Award in 2015. In 2010, Salmon received the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Workplace for his efforts to encourage the economic development of the area.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
