Hazel Pipkin

University of Texas

Hazel M. Pipkin holds an appointment as a Clinical Professor on modified service at the University of Texas. She has served the profession in numerous roles including pharmacy practitioner, pharmacy owner, educator and professional leader for over 50 years. Hazel has served as a strong advocate for women in pharmacy and was the first woman pharmacist to serve the town of Denton, Texas in 1954.

She has held numerous leadership offices including service on the APhA Board of Trustees as Speaker of the House, President of the Texas Pharmacists Association and President of the APhA-APPM. Her awards include the APhA Daniel B. Smith Award, Kappa Epsilon Vanguard Leadership Award and Texas Pharmacist of the Year.


Hazel has been active in the APhA Foundation for the past decade including service as a two- term Board member, Vice President from 2002 to 2004 and President in 2005. In addition, she has served as a Pinnacle Awards Presenter, APhA Foundation Incentive Grants Review Committee member and is a member of the APhA Foundation Scholarship Review Committee.


In the spirit of Jake Miller’s outstanding commitment to the APhA Foundation this award recognizes an individual who has advanced the mission of the APhA Foundation through any or all of the following:

  • Active involvement in the programs of the APhA Foundation

  • Exemplary support in helping establish and/or maintain APhA Foundation initiatives

  • Outstanding leadership in carrying out the mission of the APhA Foundation


The Jacob W. Miller Award is presented by the APhA Foundation and was endowed by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. The Award will be presented during the APhA Foundation’s Membership Breakfast on Sunday, April 5, 2009 as part of the APhA Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. APhA Foundation Executive Director, William Ellis offered the following comments, “Hazel Pipkin provided steady Board leadership as the APhA Foundation continued to evolve programs after the

initial success of Project ImPACT: Hyperlipidemia. Hazel’s perspective as a faculty member was put to good use as the Foundation evolved the Student Scholarship program during her Board term, setting the stage for the current program where one scholarship is available to each of the eight APhA-ASP regions. The Foundation is grateful for her dedication to our mission.”
