2003 Recipient

Gary Kadlec

CEO, ExcelleRx

The American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) Foundation announces

that Gary W. Kadlec, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is the recipient of the Jacob W. Miller Award for 2003. Kadlec will receive the award during the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 28 – April 1, 2003.

The award, sponsored by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, recognizes an individual who has advanced the mission of the APhA Foundation through any or all of the following: active involvement in the programs of the APhA Foundation; exemplary support in helping establish and/or maintain APhA Foundation initiatives; outstanding leadership in carrying out the mission of the APhA Foundation. Kadlec is the Senior Regional Vice President for Omnicare, Inc, a leading provider of pharmaceutical care for the elderly. He served as APhA President from 1997–1998 and has been an integral part of the Foundation’s growth. During Kadlec’s tenure as an APhA Presidential officer, he supported the process to re-create the Foundation by actively participating in the Foundation’s “Airlie House” Retreat in June 1997. Following the retreat, Kadlec worked with then Foundation President, Jake Miller, to establish the “Touchstone Document,” which sets forth the relationship between APhA and the Foundation, and he championed its adoption.

In addition, Kadlec was instrumental in the establishment of the Quality Center. The APhA Foundation’s Quality Center is dedicated to supporting and fostering research that improves quality in medication use, in particular, the role of the pharmacist as a solution to managing this complex process. In 1998, Kadlec fully supported the migration of the Quality Center, which fell under the APhA organizational structure, to the APhA Foundation. The Quality Center was established in 1997 through a grant from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Current APhA Foundation President, Curt Barr, comments: “The APhA Foundation Board of Directors recognizes Gary Kadlec’s strong commitment to the APhA Foundation during his term as APhA President and appreciates that his commitment continues today. He served as a guide and as a friend during our work to reestablish the Foundation, and we are pleased to honor him with the Jacob W. Miller Award.”

Kadlec received a BS in pharmacy from Ferris State University in 1972, an MBA from

Michigan State University in 1991, and a Doctor of Science (Hon.) degree from Ferris State in 2002. A third-generation pharmacist, he formed Specialized Pharmacy Services (SPS), Inc., in Michigan in 1976, and merged SPS with Omnicare in 1995.

Jacob W. Miller served as APhA Foundation President from 1991 until 2000. Miller, a
