Impact of a Smoking Cessation Screening Tool in Specialty Pharmacy to Improve Smoking Quit Rates in Adult Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Emma Hilgendorf is a resident pharmacist at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy in Wauwatosa, WI.
“Through this project, I am hoping to make nicotine replacement therapies a more available option for patients with MS that are interested in quitting smoking. Pharmacists at a specialty pharmacy are in a unique position to offer support to patients that may choose to quit smoking. With this clinical outreach model, additional monitoring will be put in place to assess patients for their smoking status and willingness to quit to reduce the speed of their disease progression.
I am honored to be a recipient of the APhA Foundation Incentive Grant and am excited to implement a new service for our patients that optimizes their health outcomes. By educating patients on the importance of smoking cessation and providing them realistic options and support for quitting, I hope we can empower patients to take control of their health and to make a change in their lives”
