Implementing a Glucagon Prescribing Protocol in a Community-Based Independent Pharmacy
Noah Gurr is a PGY1 community-based pharmacy resident with UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Moose Pharmacy in Concord, NC.
“I am honored to receive this Incentive Grant from the APhA Foundation and I am looking forward to increasing patient access to glucagon. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to unconsciousness, altered mental status, and seizures for patients, and providing glucagon to those on insulin or high-risk hypoglycemia medications can lead to fewer hospitalizations for patients. It can also provide better peace of mind for caregivers who care for an individual with diabetes.
Pharmacists in North Carolina have a unique opportunity to provide glucagon to patients without needing to contact the physician for a prescription. This can help to increase access for patients.
I am most excited about increasing access to glucagon for patients. I believe this will help me build stronger relationships with the patient population here and extend a service pharmacists are able to perform.”
