Anne Burns Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Award

Established to recognize the accomplishments of former APhA Senior Vice President of Practice Affairs, Anne Burns. Anne is most noted for her gracious manner and influential leadership in pharmacy practice change across the profession. She is considered the key to the evolution of Community-based Pharmacy Residency Programs and was recognized in 2013 with the first APhA Community Pharmacy residency Program Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Anne Burns Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Award, for Community-Based Residency Excellence in Precepting, recognizes a community pharmacy residency director or preceptor who has demonstrated excellence in precepting, mentoring, leadership, and community pharmacy residency program administration. the award, originally established in 2003, is intended to recognize pharmacy practitioners who excel as community-based pharmacy residency directors or preceptors.

About Anne Burns

Anne is a 1980 graduate of the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Pharmacy where she served as a beloved teacher and mentor to countless students for seventeen years. She received the coveted college Mariam R. Balshone Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1988, 1991, and 1996. The OSU student chapter of the APhA presented her with the APhA-ASP Appreciation Award in 1997. And students and colleagues established a legacy fund in her honor to recognize annually a fourth-year outstanding leader with the Anne L. Burns Student Award. She has received several awards for her alma mater, The Ohio State University, including the 1989 Josephine Failer Young Alumni Award and 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award. She was recently recognized as the 2022 recipient of the OSU College of Pharmacy Lifetime Achievement Award. She will be a 2024 APhA Fellow recipient and has been selected as 2025-26 APhA Honorary President in recognition of her impact on the profession as an agent of change and mentor to many.
